The Cricket in Times Square

Web Quest for 4th Grade

 

 

Introduction

As you follow the adventures of Chester, the cricket from Connecticut who visits Times Square, you will most likely want to expand on one aspect of the story.  Let your imagination take you away as you work on your project!

 Task

You will choose ONE of the five projects below to complete by the deadline provided.

  1. Model of a cricket
  2. Fortune cookies
  3. Diorama of the newsstand
  4. Travel brochure
  5. Classroom newspaper

 Process

  1. While reading the novel The Cricket in Times Square, you will complete ONE of the projects.
  2. To help you out, use the Big6 research method to help in this project.
  3. First let’s read through each of the projects. They are listed at the end of the Web Quest.
  4. Next, you need to choose the project you want to complete. 
  5. Now let’s find that information!  In the library, look for your information in these sources:

--in the reference section in encyclopedias

--in the reserve books for 4th grade

--search the OPAC for books in the nonfiction section on your topic

--the Internet using the suggested web sites for each project

  1. Read the information in the books or on the web site and look for information on your topic.
  2. Complete the project according to the instructions.
  3. You will now present your project to the class as described in the instructions.
  4. Now, for the last step:  Tell me how you think you did on this project?  Answer these 3 questions on a separate sheet of paper:

--What did I do that was really good?

--What could I do better on next time?

--Which sources helped me the most to learn about my project?

Using supplies around the house, build a model of a cricket and correctly label its 7 main parts. He must be at least 3 inches in length.  Be creative and neat.  Use these suggested web sites with your project:

  1. Fortune Cookies

Make fortune cookies for the class.  Each cookie must contain an original fortune created by you.  No store bought cookies will be accepted. You may use your own recipe for the cookies, or you may use the recipe provided by the teachers.  Use these suggested web sites for your project:

  1.  Diorama of the Newsstand

Using a shoebox and other art supplies, create a replica of the newsstand where Mario and his family work. Use the descriptions in the book to determine what the newsstand looks like.  We are looking for quality work that involves time and effort.  Use these suggested web sites for your project:

  1. Travel Brochure

Just as someone might read a brochure about New York to see what there is to do, pretend there are people who are interested in Italy, Texas.  Create a brochure with pictures, descriptions, and activities for people to see and do if they were to visit our city.  Be sure to make it sound exciting and fun so that they will want to come here.  Use plenty of color and imagination on this one.  Use these suggested web sites for your project:

  1. Classroom Newspaper

Create a classroom newspaper that is modeled after the New York Times.  Either type or neatly write this paper being sure to include pictures or graphics.  You may also create ads that you would see in the paper as well.  We expect to see at least 2 pages of this paper.  Use these suggested web sites for your project:
